A Scarlight, (a play on “Spotlight’), is a feature article showcasing the story of a courageous woman to help inspire others. The story will present how she overcame, or how she is still dealing with, the insecurities surrounding her scar(s). Scarlights will be posted once a month on our Feature Friday!

Brenè Brown, a leading shame researcher says that, and I’m paraphrasing, “once you shine a light on your shame story, it can no longer survive.” Basically, shame can only live in the dark. Once you share your story in the light, the darkness flees. The part of you that was hidden can now live free and authentic!  

Ms. Brown once discussed the connection between shame and a Dementor in the Harry Potter Series. If you’ve seen the Harry Potter series, then you know what a Dementor is. If not, then you should watch the movies because they are awesome!! Ok, getting back. If you don’t know what a Dementor is, here is my best description: it is a black, shadowy, ghostlike entity that literally sucks all the happiness and positive feelings from you. It then leaves you to die. That’s how shame shows up in our lives. Telling your story is the only way to release it’s hold on you!
